Suddenly, it was deja vu all over again. In his first start off a 19-week layoff, Hardwicke Stable's homebred SPITE THE DEVIL rallied four wide on the turn and closed from eighth at the quarter-pole to win Belmont's $250,000 Empire Classic Handicap for New York-bred three-year-olds and up on New York Showcase Day for the second consecutive year. It was the five-year-old gelding's first victory since winning the 2004 Empire Classic as the 15-to-1 sixth choice among 14 starters, but that year he already had won twice at Belmont and the track was fast, which was the only type of surface over which he had won. Again ridden by Javier Castellano and respected marginally better than the previous year as the 9.20-to-1 sixth choice among 10 starters in the one-turn mile and an eighth event, Spite the Devil made his relentless stretch run against a 23-mph east/northeasterly headwind that was gusting up to 29-

mph. His first wet (sloppy) track victory ever boosted his earnings by $150,000 to $766,945 while improving his record to 7 - 6 - 6 in 34 starts and also qualified his owner-breeder, Elisabeth Jerkens of Belrose -- who races under the banner of Hardwicke Stable -- for the maximum $10,000 breeder award.
Hall of Fame trainer H. Allen Jerkens, husband of Elisabeth Jerkens and conditioner of Spite the Devil, seemed as surprised as anyone that the gritty dark bay gelding had again found a way to win the Empire Classic: "I thought it looked like an impossible job," Jerkens confessed. "He's never been much of a mud horse. He worked a good mile (1:42) for Javier (jockey Castellano) the other day (Saturday, October 17). I really didn't think he had that big a chance, though. I thought he had the worst of the weight. The fractions (22.62, 45.61, 1:10.19) definitely helped. All of a sudden, the day changed. It looked like speed was dangerous early; then horses started to come from behind. Knowing that he hadn't been out while he was making that big run, I thought he might hang."
Largely overlooked was the fact that Jerkens had done something else unorthodox with Spite the Devil: On Friday morning, less than 36 hours prior to the Empire Classic, he had worked the gelding a half-mile in 48.56 at Belmont -- too late for that drill to appear in published past performances.
Jockey Castellano, who had three winning rides on the Showcase Day card and has now ridden Spite the Devil in seven races and three victories (including the 2004 Empire Classic), seems quite familiar with the gelding: "I worked the horse last week in the mud, and he worked great. I rode him like I always do. I know him pretty good. He likes to drop back and come from out of it. "The Chief" (Allen Jerkens) did a great job with him. He's a great horse to win this race twice."
Winner of Aqueduct's Grade 3 Withers Stakes about an hour before Funny Cide's 2003 Kentucky Derby (and a juvenile rival of Funny Cide in 2002), Spite the Devil also won Belmont's Evan Shipman Handicap for New York-breds in 2004. He is by five-time Grade 1 winner Devil His Due, whom Allen Jerkens also trained, and is the first offspring and first of three New York-bred winners produced from Samantha D, a Cryptoclearance mare who won at a two-turn mile and 70 yards at Philadelphia Park as a three-year-old. Samantha D's half-sisters include the dams of stakes winners Tempus Fugit ($342,221) and Scootin' Girl ($147,103) plus multiple stakes-placed winner Chippewa Trail ($157,541). The dam of Samantha D is Mid-Atlantic five-furlong turf specialist Cuca's Lady ($350,460). Prior to breaking her maiden, Samantha D was claimed by Elisabeth Jerkens' Hardwicke Stable for $10,000 at Delaware Park as a three-year-old in June of 1998. Spite the Devil was foaled and raised at Carl Lizza Jr.'s and Joseph Bartone's Highcliff Farm in Delanson.

GRADE 1 WINNER MILLENNIUM WIND

(10/23) Grade I Winner Millennium Wind to Highcliff in New York
Grade I winner MILLENNIUM WIND, a half-brother to Horse of the Year Charismatic, will stand the 2006 season at Joe Bartone and Carl Lizza Jr.'s Highcliff Farm near Delanson, N.Y. The 7-year-old son of Cryptoclearance will remain the property of Millennium Stallions and will stand for $5,000 live foal, down from $7,500.
In three seasons at Millennium Farms Kentucky near Lexington, Millennium Wind covered close to 300 mares, and has nearly 160 foals on the ground.
"We had three excellent seasons with Millennium Wind, but this looked like the right time to make a move," said Millennium manager William Hardin. "Highcliff did a super job getting mares to Catienus the last two years, and we think they will give a boost like that to Millennium Wind."
Suzie O'Cain of Highcliff said, "We're very excited about Millennium Wind, and feel he will be one of New York's premier stallions. He's a great looking horse who had grade I form at two and three. Being from the Fappiano sire line is an added bonus. We are confident our regional breeders will really support him."
A Fappiano grandson out of the Drone mare Bali Babe, Millennium Wind won the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) and placed in the Hollywood Futurity (gr. I), Santa Catalina Stakes (gr. II), and Louisiana Derby (gr. II) on his way to earning a career total of $769,920. He not only is a half-brother to Charismatic, a leading third-crop sire, but also to grade II winner Tossofthecoin.

WESTERN EXPRESSION Winner: RAIL BARON

Up Park Stable's RAIL BARON battled from the eighth pole home and under steady pressure from Chin Yang earned his diploma with a hard fought neck decision. Trained by Michael S. Ferarro, Rail Baron has only started three times including his tally today. The three year old gelded son of Western Expression made his debut at Saratoga on September 3 against state-bred maidens going five and one-half furlongs. Sent off at 20 to 1 with J M Luzzi in the saddle, Rail Baron could never get on track while racing five wide and finished fifth in a field of seven. Rail Baron was then shipped to Finger Lakes and made her local debut on September 26 against state-breds going six

furlongs over a sloppy track. Ridden by Yang, Rail Baron had blinkers for the first time but could only show some early speed and wound up finishing sixth beaten 11 lengths in a field of 10. Today, Ferraro added lasix for the first time and it paid off. Rail Baron part of a trained entry with Barry K. Swartz' New Guinea was sent off as the choice at $1.60 to 1. Also taking action at $3.05 to 1, was Bruno Schickedanz' Good Versus Bad. Trained by Daniel J. Poliziani, Good Versus Bad was sent to Belmont Park and ran in a state-bred maiden allowance test on October 1 going six furlongs where he finished ninth in a field of ten. Prior to that effort, Good Versus Bad rallied to run third in his debut here on September 12. Eight rivals went to the post and all were shooting for the $17,200 up for grabs. Brocco Valley with Clive Beech in the irons was sent to contest the lead from between foes while getting the opening quarter in 22.77. Rail Baron was not far behind and making a five wide move on the turn. Rail Baron and Keen Eye Will reached the quarter pole in 46.40 with Brocco Valley dropping back some. Rail Baron and Keen Eye Will matched strides and reached the eighth pole together with Brocco Valley two and one-half lengths back in third. With an eighth of a mile to go, Rail Baron and Keen Eye Will battled to the line and only a neck separated the pair. Brocco Valley lasted for the show. Rail Baron covered the distance over a good track in 1:12.70 and earned $10,320. Bred by Karen Sue Nagelson, the three year old gelded son of Western Expression out of Flying Cross by Cormorant now has one win and $11,842 in money won. Also, Rail Baron qualified for $2,064 in breeders' awards.

FOREVER SILVER Winner: PREMINGER

(10/16) PREMINGER (Courtesy nybreds.com)
Belmont's maiden special nightcap for New York-bred three-year-olds and up going a one-turn mile on Sunday ended in a dead heat between two homebred three-year-olds that had faced off in unplaced efforts 37 days earlier under similar conditions: Chevalier Stable's PREMINGER and WinStar Farm LLC's HARD IRON. In the interim, Preminger had been given three sharp half-mile workouts at Belmont, was put on Lasix medication, and equipped with blinkers by trainer Bruce Levine. Hard Iron had raced again, placing second in a one-turn mile and a sixteenth restricted maiden special at Belmont on September 30, and for Sunday's nightcap trainer Bob Dunham had named apprentice jockey Channing Hill, whose allowance is five pounds, to race-ride the dark bay for the first time. The two closely-regarded geldings (3.30-to-1 and 3.60-to-1 among nine starters) were about two lengths apart after a half-mile -- with

second choice Hard Iron second and third choice Preminger fourth -- and were closer than that for most of the race, with Preminger catching Hard Iron at the wire. Both earned $16,800, which increased Preminger's earnings to $27,816 off a record of 1 - 1 - 0 in seven starts (he had been disqualified from first to second at Saratoga) and brought Hard Iron's bankroll to $32,310 off a record of 1 - 1 - 1 in five starts. Both qualified their owner-breeders -- the Chevalier Stable of Edward and Joanne Shapoff of Pelham and the WinStar Farm LLC of Texas business partners and entrepreneurs Bill Casner and Kenny Troutt -- for $3,360 breeder awards. For jockey Eibar Coa, who has ridden Preminger in three consecutive races (two firsts, including the disqualification at Saratoga in August), it was the second winning ride on Belmont's Sunday card in a maiden special. Preminger's effort qualified the syndicate connections of Grade 1-winning millionaire Forever Silver (Silver Buck - Disabled Maid, by Correlation) -- at the time he was standing at Carl Lizza Jr.'s and Joseph Bartone's Highcliff Farm in Delanson -- for a $1,176 stallion award. Forever Silver currently stands at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Cobleskill and has progeny earnings of over $3,870,000. Hard Iron is the 76th winner in 2005 and 516th winner overall sired by champion millionaire Regal Classic (Vice Regent - No Class, by Nodouble), who stands at Joe and Anne McMahon's McMahon of Saratoga Thoroughbreds, LLC in Saratoga Springs and whose syndicate connections also qualified for a $1,176 stallion award. Preminger was foaled 13 days after Hard Iron (March 8, 2002) as the first offspring produced from Margin for Error, who is a daughter of the late New York stallion Dixie Brass and is a full sister to stakes-placed winner Clear Margins ($116,487). Hard Iron is the fifth winner and second New York-bred winner produced from his dam, Miswaki Rose, who is by Miswaki and is a half-sister to multiple stakes winners Desert Darby ($408,904) and Inagroove ($118,370) and to stakes-placed 10-time winner Frankly Tee Riffic ($149,086).
